You don't say which OS (Operating System - eg. Linux, Mac, Solaris,
Windows, etc.) you are using, so I will guess that it is some flavor of
Windows. If you just accept the default options to install OOo
(OpenOffice.org) 2.3.0 over a previous 2.x.x installation, it will
install in a new directory/folder and transfer most of your previous
configurations. In the upgrade process it will remove most (not all)
traces of the previous installation. The upgrade is very straight
forward and only requires a tiny amount of "housekeeping" to tidy things
up when completed.
