You have to use "Save as" and then select PowerPoint format.  OpenOffice
saves in ISO standard ODF file formats, by default.  Microsoft refuses
to support those ISO standard formats, to force "lock in" for their
products.  You might also take this opportunity to educate the teacher
about OpenOffice.  I think it's criminal for schools to expect students
to spend hundreds of dollars on Microsoft products, when excellent free
or low cost alternatives exist.
