Or maybe woodstracker understands MS Office because that's all s/he's ever
seen and, because of the differences in OOo, is a bit lost when trying to do
the same tasks in OOo?

I've seen people struggle with upgrades from one MSO version to another. For
that reason I'm not surprised that people would have difficulties moving
from brand M to brand O.

Woodstracker maybe you could describe some of the things you're having
difficulty with and then, with a little help from the list, can learn what
you need to and appreciate why OOo could be a better and much less costly
solution for you.
