why not open Help (press F1), and enter "read-only" on the Index tab page?

Nonetheless, I can create a password to protect a read only document
(and a normal one too).
The idea is to use the read only function to protect the document and
share it with others, but the read only documents are not protected and
can be modified by another person.

no, they cannot be modified. That's what "read-only" means. (Of course, using a hex editor or other tools, they can be modified, but we talk about the normal user and the accidental changes to a document here) However, as the Help states, they can save a copy of the document which is not read-only. And this is true for all documents: if a human being can read it, then he/she is able to at least enter the same information into a new document and change that new document. You can digitally sign the document. See Help about "digital signature". Then everyone will be able to see if it is still your original document or not.
