You can have both Microsoft Office and OpenOffice on the same computer,
as I do at work.  However, there is one thing to watch for.  When you
install OpenOffice, you will be asked if you want to make it the default
application for Microsoft Office files.  This is a personal choice, that
can be easily changed later.
