Jason what is it that you would do with Excel to be confident the data is secure? Would you use a password to make it read only or would you require a password for opening and editing the file? Calc can protect your documents. Aside from the questions asked above I'm wondering why it seems you are attempting to protect individual files rather than using permissions (ACLs or access control lists) in your network operating system to keep the files secure from all but authorized users? Depending on your situation the latter approach may be more appropriate regardless of the product used to create the files.
