Hi Jenny --

If you are a Mac user you may find, as many of my clients have, that installing and using the "X11" version of OOo is not an easy affair for the average every-day user who simply wants to make word processing documents and spreadsheets.

OOo's Mac porting project that Guy referred you to is working really hard (and making great progress) on a version that *will* run just like any other application on your Mac, but it is not ready for public use yet (although it is available for download for testers and the-merely-curious).

**Luckily** there is a "derived" project called NeoOffice that does work much more like applications you are used to. It's a simple installation and much more Mac-like to use than anything that runs in X11. see <http://www.neooffice.org>.

You might also want to subscribe to OOo's Announce list (send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) to follow the progress of the "Mac Aqua port" (that means the upcoming release that does not use X11).

I'm afraid that -- will all due respect and gratitude to everyone involved in the Mac port, which, after all got everything (including NeoOffice) off to a start for us Mac users -- the X11 version of OOo has discouraged "average Mac-end-users" from wanting to use the product. (NOTE: This is based on direct observation when I tried encouraging several of my support clients to "switch" to OOo.) The keystrokes are all different, the Open/Save/etc. file dialogs are not what users know how to navigate, copy-paste does not work ...

Guy's advice will give you a good start if you wish to try OOo under X11. I myself used it before discovering NeoOffice, which you should also consider.

PS: Note to Mac Porting and NeoOffice folks on both sides of the aisle who may be reading this list -- I support OOo and I support NeoOffice, but most of all I support the customer.

Please answer -only- to the users list, so other people may help you too.

Please read the How-To files on the Mac porting pages
(http://porting.openoffice.org/mac)
Please note that you have to install the windowing utility X11 (there
are different versions for Panther-Mac OS X 10.3.x and Tiger-Mac OS X
10.4.x).
You also have to choose between a version of OpenOffice.org for Mac
PowerPC or Mac Intel.
If you install the wrong version of X11 or OOo, it will not work.

Do you get any further with this information?
