Dear Sirs,
I am planning to buy my daughter a Laptop PC with Vista, and she needs to
have compatible documents for school work - currently Office 2003 documents
fit the bill, but If I use Open Office, can I use this to create documents
on XP, read them on XP, and create documents on Vista and read them on XP
(office 2003)
Yes, you can use OpenOffice.org to create documents on Windows XP, Windows Vista, GNU/Linux, and Unix operating systems. However, OpenOffice.org is not fully compatible to Microsoft Office 2003 formats. Similarly, older versions of Microsoft Office also can't read all types of documents created by Microsoft Office 2003.

Also, consider buying a laptop PC shipped with GNU/Linux for your daughter. You and your daughter can explore many more interesting free and open source software.

Thanks

Bye the way, you don't need to bother too much about Virus and Antivirus if you use GNU/Linux on your desktop, laptop and server computers.
