There is no (or at least very minimal) research required.  Most modern Linux
installations will automatically find the appropriate drivers and set up your
hardware "by magic".

Linux actually supports a much wider variety of hardware and peripherals
out-of-the-box than Windows does.

I have never seen a router that Linux can't talk to.  And since one of the
things that I do is "fixer" for one of our friendly local ISP's (I'm the guy
that they call for the "hard ones" that their own field techs can't figure out),
I see a lot of routers.
