StarOffice 8, patch 8, which basically is the same thing.

Yes you can do that - it is called a TEXT TABLE - it is part of the
native HSQLdb database support. For a detail description of how to set
this up please look at the HSQLdb user manual at
http://hsqldb.org or come by OOoForum.org to the Base section and ask
there for some help in getting it setup.
