Failing that, is there a way to export the entire slide show's set of
slides as a sequence of graphics files so that I could embed links to the
individual images? (Somehow this seems less elegant than the OLE
approach.)

Copy/paste Impress slide to Writer is corrupted

The only way I know of to do this is to
1) From Impress, export to HTML
This will create a complete set of images, along with some html
"glue" pages.
** Make sure you create a new folder and enter that folder before
you export, or you will mix all the presentation files (3 files
per slide) with your document files.
2) Insert the images into your Writer file: Insert > Picture > From file
Unfortunately, you have to do it one at a time, and you have to
re-format (for size & position) each image as you add it.
It's a lot of repetitive work that should be handled better by OOo, but
that's the way it is for now.
