Hi,

First thought is is that you should look at Tools>Options>Load/Save>General. Near the bottom of the pane are two lists. The first is a list of document types; the second is a corresponding list specifying how you want that type saved. This pair of lists tells OO what you want to do by default; you can always do something different for an individual document. Before making any changes here, make sure you quit the Quickstarter (System Tray icon with flying birds pictured; right click & choose Exit). Make the changes, exit Writer and then, if you want, restart the Quickstarter.

Also, in the "File>Save" and "File>Save as" dialogues, make sure the "Automatic file name extension" boxes are checked.

If this doesn't help, come back here with details of what you did and what exactly happened.
