First thought is is that you should look at
Tools>Options>Load/Save>General. Near the bottom of the pane are two
lists. The first is a list of document types; the second is a
corresponding list specifying how you want that type saved. This pair of
lists tells OO what you want to do by default; you can always do something
different for an individual document. Before making any changes here, make
sure you quit the Quickstarter (System Tray icon with flying birds
pictured; right click & choose Exit). Make the changes, exit Writer and
then, if you want, restart the Quickstarter.
Also, in the "File>Save" and "File>Save as" dialogues, make sure the
"Automatic file name extension" boxes are checked.
If this doesn't help, come back here with details of what you did and what
exactly happened.
