I've just got round to using the Base component of OOo. I have some
experience using MySQL and had a database already set up therein.
I had a lot of hassle getting the two to talk together - I used
the Wizard to set it up, but when I clicked on Tables it complained.
I eventually found my way around to Edit/Database/Properties/Additional Settings and discovered that the values I'd given the Wizard had been
discarded and it was trying to connect to a host called 'mysql' on
port '0'. Once these were set OK I got through.
I'm running OOo:2.0.2 on Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) and Mysql 5.0.38.

Now that I've got a connection and could see the table contents,
I started to set up a query. I did use MS Access briefly a long time
ago, so was not surprised to find that the layout is very similar.
I set up a query which was fine, but not quite the order I wanted:
I wanted it sorted by member name, which is in two fields: 'first'
and 'last'. Naturally I wanted the surname to be sorted first, but
I wanted to display them in the order 'first','last' so I specified
the fields to be 'last'(ascending), 'first'(ascending), 'last'
and assumed that I could click on the 'visible' checkbox to render
the first instance invisible. However, this does not seem to be
allowed. Clicking just has no effect. Can anyone explain why this
is the case and how I can achieve my desired effect?

Hello Bill,

Well, the best advice I could give you would be to either upgrade your version of OpenOffice.org to the latest distro version or replace it with the vanilla version from OpenOffic.org ( the web site ). Until the most recent distro release of the application my *strong* advice would have been going with the OpenOffice.org supplied vanilla version of the program and being sure to be using the SUN jre.

With this latest distro release of OpenOffice.org 2.3 I happily back off on that, Base seems to be running well, I would still recommend using the SUN JRE.

If you can not upgrade for some reason you may need to look at using standard SQL for your queries - the query designer can be used in this mode, but again with the 2.0.2 release it is awkward at best.
