I think Richard Matthew Stallman's point that mathematical algorithms in
general, and software algorithms in particular, should not be considered
property, «intellectual» or otherwise, is well taken. The problem is not
that Microsoft «steals» from others, but rather that it attempts to
aggregate as exclusive property that which it has taken from others and that
which is produced inside the firm, and attempts - often quite successfully -
to intimidate others with claims of «theft». The origins of what works and
what does not in MS products are far too complex for me to ravel ; I must
leave that task to other, more competent heads....
