Here's a workaround.  Go to Format | Cells... or 
right-click | Format Cells... and then the 
Numbers tab.  Select your chosen format and then 
type a space (or a number of spaces) after the 
text in the "Format code" box at the 
bottom.  Your numbers will now be displayed in 
cells right-aligned but with the blank(s) spacing 
them back from their previous position.

I LOVE this suggestion, MUCH better than what you "can" do in Excel!! I've
been wanting this capability for years!!
