You don't say which Operating System you are using nor which version of OpenOffice you downloaded. While it's "sitting there" is there nothing displayed on the screen? Have you tried disabling your Antivirus software - *after* disconnecting your computer from the internet? AV software frequently interferes with software installation. Have you looked in your system's error logs for relevant messages? Do you have an older version of OpenOffice installed?
