Hello Miguel,

Welcome to Mac!
Since the Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) is brand new, there are a few 'children's
deseases', that affect the way OpenOffice.org runs on this OS. It's mainly a
time-out when you start up OOo (the first time?), some slowness,...

Before starting to install OpenOffice.org on your Mac, it's good to look
around a bit at the How-To's on the Mac porting pages:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac

The native version (Aqua) of OOo for the Mac is still in its develpment
stages. You can use it at your own risk, certainly not for productivity
tasks, ans there are a number of things it can't do yet, that the other
versions of OOo can.
So you have to run OOo on Mac with the windowing program X11 (now also
called XDarwin or Xquartz). It's just a utility that starts up before OOo
does (triggered when you double click the OOo icon). It opens a window
called xterm (that you can simply close by clicking on thge red button),
after which OOo opens. Close the X11 program before closing down your Mac.

Now what about the young Leopard woes? The best option is to keep Leopard
and X11 updated. Leopard has already had an update (10.5.1), while the
Leopard version of X11 (or XDarwin, Xquartz) has undergone a series of
updates. See:
http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin

Some users on the list said that starting up OOo goes smoother and faster
when you first start X11 (it sits in the Applications/Utilities folder),
then OOo (while normally clicking on OOo will trigger X11).

If all this seems a bit complicated, don't worry, it will probably go
smoothly, and it's really rewarding as OOo is a great office suite.
