OpenOffice saves in ISO standard file formats by default.  Since
Microsoft refuses to support the ISO standard, you have to save in the
Excel XLS format, which you can select using the "Save as" function. 
Also make sure automatic file extension has been selected.

If that doesn't work for you, you can, as the accountant suggested, save
as a PDF file, which can be generated by clicking on File > Export and
selecting PDF format.
