I'm sorry to bother you with my problem.

No problem!

But for few months I have not managed to save files in Microsoft office file format. I have followed the guide, but still something goes wrong. Even though I do go step by step : first I select save as, then I type the name of the file and before saving the file I choose file type. BUT here's the problem. NO matter which file type I try to save my files, they appear open office.org. So it makes my work very hard.. I've been trying to make it work, but I am afraid I do not have skills to solve this problem...

Here's a guess. OpenOffice has a strange option in the Save As... dialogue box. Near the bottom, you will see an "Automatic file name extension" tick box. Has this become unticked? (This can happen easily and the change "sticks" once it has been made.) If it has, you will be saving documents in the correct format, but the files will not be getting the proper extension. So a document will be called just "name" rather than "name.doc", "name.xls", and so on. These will be valid files, but without the correct extension. If you double-click these (or if your correspondents do), the operating system will not know which application to use in opening the file. Could that be the problem?

You can correct this merely by renaming existing files to add the correct extension (provided they were saved in the correct format). And the problem will go away once you have ticked the box again.

Another possibility is that you have transferred the association your operating system has for Microsoft Office file types to OpenOffice. You may have chosen this option when installing a new version of OpenOffice. If so, then any .doc, .xls, and so on files that you create will have OpenOffice icons and will open again in OpenOffice when you double-click them. This does not mean that the files themselves are in OpenOffice format, in fact.

I trust this helps.
