Thanks:
I am using an iMac with the Tiger operating system (10.4).

Since writing, I have concluded that my slowness problem is not caused by 2.3 (it may have something to do with Parallels 3, which I use to have a virtual machine running Windows XP), but the font problem drives me nuts. I am a retired author of nonfiction but writing a novel in my retirement. The novel is in Book Antiqua and Times New Roman, both of which are on the computer and available for applications such as e-mail, but neither are available in Oo 2.3.

I downloaded Freetype, but can's figure out how to get that into 2.3 either.

Hi:
Missing the fonts is a big problem. I have a hundred-thousand words
written in 2.1 and with 2.3 I only get near-matches for the fonts, so
editing is a problem. Not only is 2.3 very slow to open (even the
"open" window is very slow to appear), but I think that it has slowed
down all the operations on the computer. I tried to put 2.3 in the
trash, but it still appears when I start the computer. Fortunately,
I saved 2.1 and can go back to using it.

You don't say which Operating System you are using so it's hard to advise you on font installation procedures.
