Sorry to reply to my own post but I've solved *part* of the mystery.

I find that I need to put "http://"; before the text in the "hyperlink"
function. This makes the link live and my browser fires up correctly.
However, it does *not* show the text as blue on a grey background.

Help!

Oh, Brian Barker, your  "trick" of concatenating the contents of a cell
using "&" works perfectly although it can only be used within the
"hyperlink" function and *not* by clicking the "hyperlink" toolbar button
and filling in the form.
