Greeting Open Source Community,
I'm running OO 2.3 on a Windows XP Pro machine.
My spell check no longer works. Its loss was quite random. I haven't changed
any settings recently. It was working fine earlier today.
I had changed myself over to Canadian spelling many weeks ago. I tried
switching back to US spelling. No spell check. I tried downloading the Canadian
dictionary and switching back. Nada. I tried up grading to 2.3
Same problem.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. To no avail.

Now. I didn't want to have to do this. but, I'm left little choice.
I have, in my hand, a Microsoft 2007 DVD. I didn't want to go over to the dark side. But, I'm left with little choice. Perhaps one day Open Office will fix this terrible error, and I can rejoin the beautiful Open Source Writing Community again.
When you say "no spell check" and "nada", exactly what happens when you
a) deliberately type a misspelt word?
b) ask for the whole document to be checked?
In Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages has the language you
selected got a blue check mark and a little "abc" next to it? If not,
the dictionary is *not* installed.
In the same place, have you got "for the current document only" checked?
You may want to review this.
Do you have the Quickstarter running? I have noticed frequently that
Quickstarter gets in the way of OO's memory of changes to things like
language settings. Turn off Quickstarter before making changes, start a
single instance of Writer from Start>All Programs, make the changes,
shut down Writer. Start Writer to check the changes have "stuck". Now
you may re-start Quickstarter.
Have you inadvertently changed the default paragraph style? Go to
Format>Styles and Formatting and *right* click Default in the list of
styles. Click the Font tab and check that the language setting is as you
require it.
If all this fails, come back with details of what you did and exactly
what happens in regards to my first two questions.
As to using Microsoft Office, it's your money.
