When I want to use graphics or pictures, I just save the pictures I want to use
to "My Pictures" in "My Documents" file and then go to Insert - Picture - from
file, it takes me to a "Save Box" and I locate the "Picture file," find my
picture, click on Open and zap, there is my picture in my document and I can
move it around where I wish and also re-size it.

Hmmm. Not my area but I don't think there is a "the graphics directory".

When I do Insert Picture From File I get a sort of browser window from
which I can choose the directory and then the file. So you can put your
pictures where you like.

There's also a thing called the Gallery accessed from Tools>Gallery
which is different although, obviously, related. See the Help under
Gallery for more information.

You might find Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Paths of interest. The
Gallery and the Graphics directory are separately configurable. It's the
latter from which "Insert Picture From file" works.

Chapter 8 of the Writer Guide may also help. See
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/index.html
