Have you actually turned on the Regular Expression option? In the
Search
& Replace pane click More Options and then select Regular Expressions.
If that still fails, come back here with more information about exactly
what you are doing.

Thanks for the hint - not that the Search and Replace (Find and Replace) pane
seemed relevant, logical, or effective, but if regular expressions are to be
turned off and on in the Find and Replace Pane, then perhaps they are turned
off and on in formulas as well, so I found Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org
Calc->Calculate, where there is an option called "Enable regular expressions in
formulas", which, when checked, has the desired effect. And there it is in the
description of the search function, just under the link to the list of regular
expressions, which sucked me in so I got all involved in the details rather
than paying attention to the part that told how to enable it. I would prefer
the default to be to have regular expressions enabled, but that's what I get
for using sed and vi for twenty years.
Thanks again,
Henry
