Which version of OpenOffice are you using? Which version of which Operating System are you using? Which e-mail program are you using? Are you saving the document in OpenOffice format? Or Microsoft Word format? Or Adobe Acrobat format? Or what? When you save the document, is the little box labelled "Automatic file name extension" ticked? It should be.

Are you sending the document as an attachment or as part of the e-mail? The latter is not recommended, especially with complex formats like backgrounds - not complex to you perhaps but a very advanced feature for e-mail messages. Many people's e-mail programs will block such messages or not display them correctly.

When you do Save As, the default "type" is ODF (Open Document Format, the internationally accepted standard document format that OpenOffice uses but which MS Word can't read without additional software from a non-Microsoft author). However, OpenOffice lets you save documents in different formats depending on what you need to do. For example, if you want to have the document professionally printed, the most commonly accepted format is probably PDF. Other formats have their uses too.

Your e-mail program will allow any "type" of attachment to be *sent*. However, any ISP used by any of the people to whom you send the document might block any type of attachment depending on that ISP's policy. In addition, your recipients' individual security policies may also block different formats. However, OpenOffice format (.odf), Microsoft Word format (.doc) and Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf) should all be acceptable in this context.
