The short and curly of things is that you need to install a dictionary for NZ English (there is no tick + ABC icon next to your language selection). Have a look at 'file > wizards > Install more dictionaries' - its pretty self explanatory from there on.
You'll need to restart OpenOffice (including quick starter) for the new dictionary to take effect.
