I once had a corrupt file that Excel didn´t managed to open. Tried with
OO.o and Calc opened it with no problems.... :-)
but as James wrote.. it could be more corrupt than mine example above,
or a 2007-format on the Excel-file.

OpenOffice should be able to open Excel spreadsheets, other than those
created with the Office 2007 version. It could be a corrupt file. Do
you get any error messages?
