I think it's something to do with Gmail's SMTP server. If I use that, I
don't get the replies.

Whoops! I thought (and said - twice) that it was the mail provider
rather than the client that caused this effect. My misunderstanding,
apparently. Thanks for the correction.
I use KMail and always get copies of my own posts via GMail.
