I have recently started using Calc and am having difficulty in sorting

I have been into Data/Sort and endeavoured to choose the family name (in
alphabetical order) to sort by and tried to change the parameters but try as
I might, I cannot achieve what I want.
Any help would be appreciated.

What probably will help:
just put the focus in one of the cells in the area.
When starting Data|Sort, OOo Calc will select the whole area involved.
Most problems I've seen, are related to this, because people in Excel
have (or are used) to make some selection themelves.
