One of two things happened when you saved the Writer document.
1) You saved the file in OpenOffice.org's native file format which is an ISO
standard. Microsoft will not read this ISO standard format, so you have to
save the file in a form that MS Word will understand.
2) When you saved the file, the box labeled Automatic file name extension was
not checked. (It is at the bottom of the Save As window.)
Solutions:
Open the Writer document using OpenOffice.org. Use File > Save As to save
the document in an MS Word format. In the Save As window, change the File
type drop down list from OpenDocument Format (.odt) to Microsoft Word
97/2000/XP (.doc). Then click save. Also make sure that the box labeled
Automatic file name extension is checked.
