OpenOffice.org doesn't ask for a product code. As you say, it is free software.

However, Vista comes with a trial version of Microsoft Office that
does ask for a product code, and only gives you limited usage until
you pay for it. I believe that the message you are receiving is
actually coming from Microsoft Office.
