I am not sure that this is what you are looking for, but when you set
your reference for your cross-reference, you can name it a1, a2, etc.
(Insert > Cross-reference > References). When you insert the reference to it,
select the "Insert reference" in the Type list, the a1 (or a2, etc.) in the
Selection list, and perhaps page in the Format list. While the page number of
the reference will be showing, when you move the cursor over the reference,
the name a1 (or a2, etc.) will be shown is a small pop-up box.
