I'm using version 2.3.1 for WinXP. Recently (since version 2.3, I think)
the definition of a table row in Writer seems to have changed with
regard to handling of merged cells. My situation is that I start with a
table with individual rows that form a logical group. I don't want this
group split across a page, so I vertically merge cells (in my case,
those in the first column) to form a single logical "row," with the
table properties set to not split rows across pages. This used to work
fine, but now it appears that the page break is allowed to occur after
any of the logical "subrows." The merged cell can now be split across
pages.
My workaround is to split the table at the beginning of the group
(retaining the heading) and force a hard page break if necessary. This
is not really satisfactory. In addition to the extra steps involved,
there is a lot of sensitivity to changes (even to cell contents for the
other columns). These tables sometimes need to be changed by others,
including some MS Office users who are distinctly not power users.
Does anybody know a better way? Is it a bug to allow a cell to be split
when the properties prohibit row splitting? It seems like one to me.
