I've never had that happen in all my years of using OOo. As you pointed out
since it is a different file name it will not be overwritten.  Are you sure
you just didn't save the .odt somewhere else or accidently delete the .odt ?

OOo does not import PDF's (especially for editing). There are few tools
outside the Adobe ones that can do this successfully (you may have to google
for the list).
