Dear Sir,
I develop MSAccess databases in my spare-time. I read an article on your
new "Base" application and was wondering:
Can I download "Base" separate from the OpenOffice package? If so - can
you provide me with a link?
NO, OpenOffice.org is a fully integrated single application, you can
install some packages separately but must download the whole. For
completeness you can download OpenOffice.org WITHOUT Base however under
the distribution versions from Ubunutu repositories.
Back to the point - a minimal install for Base is the Base module and
the Writer module.
With my VBA and Access experience - Would it be easy for me to start
developing using "Base"?
Honestly, Base is not Access by any stretch of the imagination. In fact
one of the problems is that many functions in Base look a lot like they
do in Access but work differently, so that can be a real pain because in
this case appearances truly can be deceiving. Also the StarBasic
language is not all that dissimilar from VBA - but that is not really
the issue, the issue is that you use the OpenOffice.org API to get
things done and that is very different.
Still I would say - give it a try - just remember, they are different
right to the core so be prepared to do things differently.
