Bonnie,
I solved the launch problem by following someone's advice in this forum
last month: Launch X11 by itself first, then launch OO.o. It's not much
trouble to keep both icons in the bottom bar.
Don't know about your other issues. What seems to cause crashes?
Have you tried re-installing OO after updating X11?
