If you don't need v1.x, you can delete it, as you would any other application. In Window, that would be with add/remove software, in the Control Panel. If you'd like to retain v1.x, you can get v1.1.5, which is the last of the v1 series, which can read, but not write the new ODF formats. The current version is 2.3.1. Both v1.1.5 and v2.3.1 can be downloaded for free, from www.openoffice.org. If v1.1 is indeed the cause of your problem, installing v1.1.5 may fix it. Installing v2.x will not affect any 1.x installation.
