Is it possible to create a document three columns wide in which the first column continues on to the second page ( etc) instead of going up to the top of the first column on the first page.

Yes - using a table.

o Go to Insert | Table... .
o Select three columns and one row.
o Remove the tick from Border if desired. ("Don't split table" must *not* be ticked.) o Click in the table and go to Table | Table Properties... (or right-click | Table...) and then the Text Flow tab. Make sure that "Allow table to split across pages and columns" and "Allow row to break across pages and columns" are both ticked. (I think they should be by default, anyway.)
o Enter your text.

I trust this helps.
