What you are describing is vendor lockin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor_lock-in In addition Publisher is not a real Desktop Publishing Program, often seen as a toy program by DTP experts. 98% of the normal users purpose for using Publisher is achieved in Writer or a combination of Writer/Draw. Most of the functions normal users would use are features of modern Word Processors. The only impediment to change is often only familiarity with the'lock-in program'. Other than that Publishers only other benefit seems to be the number of built in templates. If you wish to use a real desktop publishing program scribus is a free alternative. tp://www.scribus.net/ > With MS Publisher I convert the product to be used with browser > When I have large documents the converted product works well on > Internet Explorer, but is not fully compatible with Opera, Firefox, or > Netscape - Typical Microsoft.
