\t worked for me on Ubuntu 7.10, OpenOffice.org 2.3 Swedish.

   - Ctrl+F → More options → Tick Regular expressions
   - In the "Search for" field, enter \t

Hope this will help. I tried to replace tabs with the word "Hej" (Hello in
Swedish) a minute ago and it worked perfectly.
