You haven't told me much more that the first message. Have you verified that? What PDF files? Can they not create new ones? Read old ones? PDF's from other apps? Does reinstalling OpenOffice fix the problem? About the only thing I can think of that might be affected by installing other software, is the file associations, which determine the default app for a file type. Also, in a previous life, I provided software support at IBM. One thing I learned is you cannot rely on what a user tells you is the problem. They often don't have a clue about what's actually happening.
