I have OOo 2.3 on Gutsy x86_64. I need to place graphics in Writer documents
(i.e., academic papers). The graphics are created in a program called TreeForm,
a Java application to create syntax trees:

XML import
TreeForm can export in JPG and PNG, both of which are bitmap (raster) image formats. As a result they do not scale well and the print output is not the best. It can also create a PDF by printing to a PDF creator. The PDF would be great, except that OOo does not have a PDF import filter. (I can place the PDF in Kword, but if I later open the Kword file in OOo, OOo strips out the PDF.)
Because of these limitations I have been trying a different tack. TreeForm's native format is XML. However, if I try importing the XML file into OOo I get a page with the XML code, not the graphic. I get the same results with Draw as with Writer. I also get a page of code if I try to import into Kword or Abiword, as well as drawing apps like Inkscape, etc.
Copy/paste
TreeForm can also copy and paste into Word. However, OOo sees nothing on the
clipboard. Clipboards on Linux are very different from Windows, so I'm
wondering if there is any documentation for how OOo looks at the clipboard.
You have probably tried this, but just in case, “Paste Special” may see
things in the clipboard that normal “Paste” doesn’t. Try using “Paste
Special” from the menu or CTRL-SHIFT-V from the keyboard.
