Exporting as a PDF does not change your original file at all, it creates
a new file with the .pdf extension. So you can go on working with your
document after the export; it should still even be open. Save it as you
normally would, and later, just open the .odt version of the file
(Openoffice can't open the .pdf version). The PDF solution is probably
the best one when you are sending a document they don't need to edit. If
they do need to edit, try File > Send > Document as E-mail and choose
the Word format they can use. Or use Save As and choose the Word format.
(In that case, it will probably be less confusing if you delete any .odt
version and continue your work using only the .doc version. Openoffice
is perfectly happy with that.)
