You did not have to pay for OpenOffice, as it's a free download from www.openoffice.org. I assume you're trying to open the file from the email program. What happens if you save it first and then try to open it? Also, if those file are created by Office 2007 i.e. .DOCX files, OpenOffice cannot open them.
