Only Publisher will open publisher files. But to be completely honest with
you. If you and the clients are modifying these files, you should be doing it
with the same program and same program version. Otherwise, there could be
problems. This is true even if everyone is using MS Office but some are using
XP and others are still using Office 95. And there could be even a bigger
problem is you or one of your clients decides to use MS Office 2007.
OpenOffice.org (OOo) will read and write .doc and .xls files. However,
macros have to be rewritten between Calc (OOo spreadsheet application) and
Excel.
I admit to being biased, but everyone might be better off using OOo for
text documents and spreadsheets. Scribus might be a better program to use
compared to Publisher. While I can not speak for the Scribus files, all OOo
files are zipped files. All but any image files are contained in text files
which can be opened by even notepad or Write. Besides, the encryption in OOo
is so much better than MS Office.
