I tried the links you gave above. The top most results I obtained were mostly of this very newsgroup conversation! It appears that there isn't much on this topic in openoffice.org.
I guess I was getting my hopes too high. OOo is, after all, still in its infancy in becoming a professional word processor. It has some very nicely developed features, but needs quite some work in other areas. From my experience, most of the work related to technical writing templates (research papers, math equations, bibliography, exams, etc.) appears to be less important to the developers as compared to features which are most commonly used in MS Word.
Nevertheless, I still believe OOo is an excellent work in progress. Kudos to the developers!
