Select the text and type Ctrl-Shift-Space (or Format|Default
formatting from the menu) does the trick.
There is also a "Clear Formatting" option on the drop down style
selector on the formatting toolbar. Once used then you can reapply
"Default Format" the same way. I use it a lot on stuff copied and pasted
from the web to Writer.
Irritatingly, sometimes none of these methods work and I've had to
resort to the cut-and-paste-special method after trying everything else.
Grr. I've noticed that 2.3.1 is a lot better in this regard, though.
