Hi Johnny and Tom,
You are both absolutely correct. Following Johnny's suggestion I posted this
on comp.openoffice.devel.api and received this response from Bernard
Marcelly:
You are the victim of a supposedly smart feature. There is somewhere in
the same column a cell containing the text : map

Solution:

Menu Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org Calc > Calculate

uncheck : Automatically find column and row labels

______
Bernard

As you both noted, indeed there is a cell with "mapa" in it. Bernard's
suggestion solved the problem. But........... while I have your attention
and this is a propos to "learning about macros" I am making slow progress
on understanding the ins and outs of OOo Basic. I have written the
following macro which seems to work:
Sub oe
' Appends the character œ at the end of selected cell
Dim oDoc As Object
Dim oCell As Object
Dim oSheet As Object
Dim here As Object
oDoc = ThisComponent
oSheet=oDoc.Sheets.getByName("Sheet1")
here=ThisComponent.CurrentSelection
'oCell=oSheet.getCellByposition(0,0) 'A1
' Print (here.getString() & "œ")
' Place the text to insert here
here.setString(here.getString() & "œ")
End Sub
This is almost what I want but is there a trivial change that I can make so
that œ is inserted at the current cursor position when one is adding data
to a cell? I searched every where in Andrews (online version) book and
couldn't find any reference to CursorPos or CurPos or something of that
order. I am not trying to avoid doing the grunt work but I really did try
and couldn't any reference to specifying the current cursor position. I'm
sure it's in there somewhere but I can't guess what it's called.
Thanks again for your excellent help (really useful and really appreciated).
Jonathan
