I have spent nearly 40 years designing, building, managing library
systems. Building one from scratch is not something to be started
without a lot of soul searching, they look easy but as you get into
working with them you'll find it necessary to keep adding complexity to
cope with the incredible variability in bibliographic data.
Of course, the complexity will depend on how many books you have, and
how broad a field your collection covers. A list of a few hundred books
all of them of a single type (novels, say) isn't very hard to do, but
once you get into the many hundreds and there's a variety of them you
will find you need a few bells and whistles - such as the means of
including cross references, a means for maintaining consistency in how
authors names are recorded, allowing for more than one author - even
more than one title.
There's some good open source systems available. Check them out first!
