Hello Di, In order for the spell checker to work you have to make sure you have the correct dictionary installed and that you have set up OOo to use an available dictionary. Open a new document and check that in Tools > Options > Language Settings section the language for the documents has a blue tick next to it. In my version for example, I do not have the English (Australia) dictionary (I guess that's what you want to use from your email address). Try using English (UK) to see if it works. To install new languages, go to File > Wizards > Install new Dictionaries and follow the instructions. The problem with Outlook Express is probably not correlated.
